As the mass-BitTorrent lawsuits continue to pile up in U.S. courts, more stories of what appear to be wrongfully accused persons hit mainstream media. A 70 year-old retired widow from San Francisco falls into this category. The grandma was recently 'caught' sharing porn on BitTorrent and was offered a $3,400 settlement, or the option to risk a $150,000 fine in a full court case.

MIT Uses Video Games to Create the Smartest, Scariest Computer Ever

Remember how much of a pain SimCity was? Now imagine trying to play it in Russian. Researchers at MIT have created machine-learning systems that are able to analyze instruction manuals to help them beat video games. The concept started with work by graduate student S.R.K. Branavan, working in the lab of Regina Barzilay, an associate professor in the computer science department at MIT. Branavan's group created a script that installed software in Windows by referencing instructions from Microsoft's website. Since then, they've taken it further, creating a program to play the turn-based strategy game, Civilization. The program has been a success too, winning 79 percent of the time with the help of the manual as compared to a near-random 46 percent win rate on its own. "Games are used as a test bed for artificial-intelligence techniques simply because of their complexity," Branavan said in an MIT press release. "Every action that you take in the game doesn't have a predetermined outcome, because the game or the opponent can randomly react to what you do. So you need a technique that can handle very complex scenarios that react in potentially random ways." A computer playing games is nothing new, whether you're battling the machine in Mortal Kombatw_CYrrk_ or chess. But in those instances the computer is always reactionary, at least in a sense. They're programmed to play based on an algorithm devised by a human, and no matter how cleverly that algorithm is designed, the computer is stuck with those rules. If you've ever been bored enough to have the computer play itself in, say, a hockey game, the play is generally sloppy and the outcome is mostly a coin-flip, just like the MIT program only winning half its Civilization games when it couldn't search for help. Explanation: NGC 3314 is actually two large spiral galaxies which just happen to almost exactly line up. The foreground spiral is viewed nearly face-on, its pinwheel shape defined by young bright star clusters. But against the glow of the background galaxy, dark swirling lanes of interstellar dust appear to dominate the face-on spiral's structure. The dust lanes are surprisingly pervasive, and this remarkable pair of overlapping galaxies is one of a small number of systems in which absorption of light from beyond a galaxy's own stars can be used to directly explore its distribution of dust. NGC 3314 is about 140 million light-years (background galaxy) and 117 million light-years (foreground galaxy) away in the multi-headed constellation Hydra. The background galaxy would span nearly 70,000 light-years at its estimated distance. A synthetic third channel was created to construct this dramatic new composite of the overlapping galaxies from two color image data in the Hubble Legacy Archive.

A generic "Republican candidate" would beat Obama, 47 percent to 39 percent, among registered voters, according to a new Gallup poll released Thursday, reflecting the vulnerabilities facing the president as he gears up for reelection. Google Back On Track In Q2, Beats The Street With Over $9 Billion In Revenue

Google has just released their Q2 2011 numbers, and after a slightly-off Q1, it looks like Q2 is right back on track for the search giant. They beat the number the Street was expecting across the board. The key one being revenue: Google earned $9.03 billion for the quarter ended June 30, 2011 (a new record for quarterly revenue). The street had been expecting about $8.6 billion. The revenue numbers were up 32 percent over the year-ago period. As the chart above shows, the Google.com numbers were the real strength here. Google-owned sites generated $6.23 billion in revenues, accounting for 69 percent of total revenues. That was a 39 percent increase over the year ago period.

Remember the "stimulus," or, as it was officially titled, the Recovery Act of 2009? It was President Obama's first major legislative initiative, enacted the month after he took office with only Democratic votes in the House and just three Republicans in the Senate (one of whom was a Democrat by that summer). The price tag was huge, some $800 billion, or 50 times the size (in nominal terms) of the stimulus Bill Clinton proposed at the outset of his presidency. Congress killed the $16 billion Clinton stimulus because it was too expensive. Unemployment that January was 7.6%, and Obama's economic advisers warned that it could rise as high as 8% without the stimulus. With the stimulus, it rose as high as 10.2% in October 2009. Last month's rate was 9.2%, still 1.2 points higher than the level the stimulus was supposed to prevent us from ever reaching. By contrast, in January 1993 unemployment was 7.3%. Without the Clinton stimulus, it had declined to 6.5% by the end of that year.

John Kasich signed into law a nearly $56 billion state budget that contains broad policy changes for the state, after vetoing a provision that would have given the state first dibs on repurchasing state prisons sold to private developers. The 3,262-page bill privatizes five state prisons, overhauls Medicaid, eliminates Ohio's estate tax in 2013, bans most abortions in public hospitals, and ties teachers' pay more closely to student achievement. "We promised Ohioans a new way and a new day, and we're delivering," Kasich said. He signed the two-year spending plan on the eve of a new fiscal year after striking the prison language and six other items. In his veto message, Kasich said he thought the state guarantee would dramatically decrease the value of the prisons and raise costs. At that distance, this degree wide field of view spans almost 100 light-years, courtesy of ESO's new VLT Survey Telescope and OmegaCAM. The sharp, false color image includes both optical and infrared data, following faint details of the region's gas and dust clouds against a backdrop of central Milky Way stars. Stellar winds and energetic light from hot, massive stars formed from M17's stock of cosmic gas and dust have slowly carved away at the remaining interstellar material producing the cavernous appearance and undulating shapes. M17 is also known as the Omega Nebula or the Swan Nebula.
