A Closer Look at New Zones in Cataclysm Posted: 31 Oct 2009 04:20 PM PDT I want to take a look at a few more detailed aspects of the new expansion, focusing most intently on the new zones being added to the game. We still don't know all that much about the starting areas, except that they are being modeled in the same way after the progression instance style that Blizzard used in Wrath to such great effect. |
APOD: 2009 October 31 - VdB 152: Reflection Nebula in Cepheu Posted: 31 Oct 2009 04:10 PM PDT Described as a "dusty curtain" or "ghostly apparition", mysterious reflection nebula VdB 152 really is very faint. Far from your neighborhood on this Halloween Night, the cosmic phantom is nearly 1,400 light-years away. Also cataloged as Ced 201, it lies along the northern Milky Way in the royal constellation Cepheus. Near the edge of a large mole |

We're Not Pirates, We're 'Protectors of the Environment' Posted: 31 Oct 2009 03:40 PM PDT Somali pirates demanding $7 million in ransom for a British sailing couple say boats from other countries are plundering Somalia's fish-rich waters. A pirate spokesman said "Western forces continue to loot our natural resources. They continue to harass local fishermen and destroy their fishing nets, so we want them to taste the consequence." |

Inhibitors of Important Tuberculosis Survival Mechanism ID Posted: 31 Oct 2009 02:10 PM PDT Scientists identify compounds that can disable an important survival mechanism in tuberculosis bacteria. This research could lead to the design of new anti-TB drugs. Attempts to eradicate tuberculosis (TB) are stymied by the fact that the disease-causing bacteria have a sophisticated mechanism for surviving dormant in infected cells |

Teens Sue School Over Punishment For Racy MySpace Pics Posted: 31 Oct 2009 01:00 PM PDT INDIANAPOLIS: Two sophomore girls have sued their school district after they were punished for posting sexually suggestive photos on MySpace during their summer vacation. The American Civil Liberties Union, in a federal lawsuit filed last week on behalf of the girls, argues that Churubusco High School violated the girls's free speech. |
Bizarre Bubbles Invade the Ocean Floor Posted: 31 Oct 2009 12:50 PM PDT Bunches of grapes grown in a radioactive environment? The genetically modified eggs of some strange unidentified marine species? Or a fungal growth that would call for a hasty trip to the doctor? Nothing of the sort. It's stunningly beautiful bubble coral, and once we saw it we simply had to blog about it. Don you're dark glasses... |

Android Army Pumped for All-Out Attack on iPhone Posted: 31 Oct 2009 11:30 AM PDT Soon, you'll need more than two hands to count the number of Android phones on the market. At this rate, it seems inevitable that the number of phones running Google's open source operating system will eventually outnumber the number of iPhones, which run Apple's proprietary (and closed) operating system |
10 Life Lessons from Movie Monsters Posted: 31 Oct 2009 11:20 AM PDT Monster movies, from the Depression-era Universal classics to more modern fare, have always been synonymous with escapism. We've certainly never associated good life lessons with these nefarious creatures. But nevertheless, there may be a few to glean. What can Dracula, Frankenstein, the Wolf Man and others movie monsters teach us about morality? |

NASA Launches Mission To Track Polar Ice By Plane Posted: 31 Oct 2009 09:30 AM PDT Climate scientists are about to lose a satellite that helped show how global warming affects the Earth's polar ice caps. A replacement won't be in orbit until at least 2015, so NASA will use a DC-8 aircraft instead to track whether the process of melting and subsequent sea-level rise is accelerating. |
