The Recession and the Web Design Industry Posted: 15 Apr 2010 04:30 PM PDT Within the Western economies different sectors have faired better than others. Manufacturing has been pulverised, but new media and the digital economy have continued to expand – albeit at a slower pace than previously expected. Consequently, the web design industry has faired reasonably well in these difficult times. |

MIT researchers engineer viruses to split water for hydrogen Posted: 15 Apr 2010 04:10 PM PDT One of the issues facing hydrogen-powered cars is large-scale hydrogen production. H2 proponents always cite the fact that hydrogen is the most abundant resource in the universe. This is true, but it's not exactly growing on hydrogen trees, ripe for the plucking. Newly engineered viruses may have the answer for efficient hydrogen production. |

Social Hub Site Ning Cuts 40% of Staff, Kills Free Services Posted: 15 Apr 2010 03:20 PM PDT Just a month after Gina Bianchini, co-founder of build-a-social-network service Ning, departed the company, it's cutting 40 percent of its staff and axing its free, ad-supported service. Existing free networks will have the opportunity to either convert to paying for premium services, or transition off of Ning. |

National Labor Committee report on Chinese CE factories Posted: 15 Apr 2010 01:40 PM PDT The report details some of what we've come to expect in stories of labor abuses -- near children, most of them women, working for 16 or 17 hours a day, living in nearly deplorable conditions, for less than a dollar an hour -- all so that the world's ever-growing need for / addiction to consumer electronics can be fed. |
Dogs: Not Down with the iPad [VIDEO] Posted: 15 Apr 2010 01:30 PM PDT Oh man, the "cute things + iPads" meme is revving up for real. First, came children with iPads, and then cats with iPads and now, inevitably, dogs with iPads. After watching this video, I would wager that cats are early adopters, while dogs are just more traditional. Pfft, he probably still has a landline, too. |

47% of Tea Partiers Pay No Federal Income Taxes Posted: 15 Apr 2010 01:10 PM PDT If the Tea Party movement has a similar share of Americans making under $50,000 as the broader population (as a recent Gallup poll suggests), then why is this movement rallying under the banner "Taxed Enough Already!" when half of them aren't taxed at all? Drink the Kool-aid, err… tea & fall in line with the rhetoric. Teabaggers are hypocrites. |
