Pfizer: Drug Giant Makes Bank from Drugs That Can Kill You Posted: 10 Jul 2010 04:30 PM PDT To say that Pfizer has been accused of wrongdoing is like saying BP had an oil spill. The drug company is best known for Lipitor, a drug that brings cholesterol down and Viagra, a drug that brings other things up. But the world's largest research-based pharmaceutical company which sits between Goldman Sachs and Marathon Oil on the Fortune 500.... |

Coffin Painted with 30 Pairs of Breasts: Represents Cancer Posted: 10 Jul 2010 02:50 PM PDT A Christchurch woman dying of cancer will be buried in a pink coffin decorated with pairs of breasts. Pam Hermansen may only have a month or two to live so she is planning a personalised funeral – right down to the hand-painted coffin. "I wanted to make them subtle, but boobs aren't subtle are they? They need to stand out. They're beautiful boobs." |
By the Numbers: Vuvuzela! (Infographic) Posted: 10 Jul 2010 02:50 PM PDT To say that the vuvuzela is currently one of the world's most listened-to "musical instruments" (some would say "noise maker" is a more appropriate term here) is hardly an exaggeration. Vuvuzela sales have skyrocketed, though vuvuzela manufacturers say they have yet to see a true economic benefit because of their incredibly thin margins. |

Poles Decide On A President And A War Posted: 10 Jul 2010 02:30 PM PDT The presidential election brought Poland's commitment to Afghanistan and Iraq into sharp relief. Poland's ruling party celebrated the election of its candidate as president last week, but now the real challenge for the Civic Platform begins: leading Poland through perilous economic times and negotiating a seemly exit from the unpopular Afghan war. |

The Economist: Is Poker a Game of Skill or Chance? Posted: 10 Jul 2010 01:40 PM PDT David Sklansky, author of "The Theory of Poker," writes that "expert players do not rely on luck. They are at war with luck. They use their skills to minimize luck as much as possible." This is not a theoretical point; it is at the heart of a dispute about pokers future, as many gaming laws in the U.S. apply only to games of chance. |
Should taxpayers come rescue the Chinese drywall victims? Posted: 10 Jul 2010 01:20 PM PDT Who should pay to help the hapless homeowners? The drywall's makers and importers, of course, but winning a judgment in court and collecting from a firm halfway around the world are two different things. Insurers say it's not their problem. Even a compassionate heart has trouble making the case that taxpayers should pay. |

Collector Car Appreciation Day. Your Tax Dollars at Work. Posted: 10 Jul 2010 12:50 PM PDT Never let it be said that the U.S. Congress doesn't pay attention to car buyers and owners. The U.S. Congress has deemed today, Friday, July 9th, to be the first Collector Car Appreciation Day. With everything happening with the economy, the Gulf, and the Middle East, this just doesn't seem like much of a priority. |
Best Value Teams in The 2010 World Cup (Infographic) Posted: 10 Jul 2010 12:40 PM PDT Statisticians and data freaks are already doing the World Cup number crunching – possibly the most interesting piece of statistical information that has surfaced from the torrent of World Cup data feeds comes from a study that recently carried out an analysis of the economic value of the players from some of the World Cup's most successful teams. |
New Report: Synthetic Food Dyes Equal A Rainbow of Risks Posted: 10 Jul 2010 12:20 PM PDT Synthetic and harmful dyes are found in all sorts of food items. From granola bars to fruit roll-ups to M&Ms to Kraft salad dressings to Kid Cuisine frozen meals. In fact, the Center for Science in the Public Interest notes that each year manufacturers pour about 15 million pounds of synthetic dyes into the foods that kids are most likely to eat. |

Judge Slams RIAA, $675k Fine Ruled Unconstitutional Posted: 10 Jul 2010 10:30 AM PDT Another break happened today in the RIAA's case against Boston University student Joel Tenenbaum, as the $675k fine was reduced by 90%. The judge in the case criticised the RIAA and held that the jury's damages were unconstitutional. Even the reduced fine is described as "severe, even harsh" by the District Judge. |
