Study Says Biochar Can Offset Up to 12% of Greenhouse Gases Posted: 15 Aug 2010 05:20 PM PDT As much as 12 percent of the world's human-caused greenhouse gas emissions could be sustainably offset by producing biochar, a charcoal-like substance made from plants and other organic materials. That's more than what could be offset if the same plants and materials were burned to generate energy, concludes a study published today. |
Obama: No comment on 'wisdom' of Islamic center Posted: 15 Aug 2010 05:00 PM PDT President Barack Obama told CNN Saturday that in defending the right of Muslims to build a community center and mosque near ground zero in a speech Friday night, he was "not commenting on the wisdom" of the project but trying to uphold the broader principle that the government should treat "everyone equal, regardless" of religion. |

The Twitter Bible Keeps It Short and Sacred Posted: 15 Aug 2010 04:20 PM PDT Chris Juby has set himself a task of truly biblical proportions: to summarize the 800,000-plus words in the Old and New Testaments in a series of snappy daily tweets. Juby, a freelance Web designer and director of worship at King's Church in the northern English city of Durham, plans to condense one Bible chapter a day in 140 characters or less. |

Anti-Immigrant Fervor Will Cost Republicans Latino Vote Posted: 15 Aug 2010 03:50 PM PDT The electoral consequences of the GOP's efforts to alienate the fastest growing voting bloc in America is sure to backfire on the GOP. As anti-immigrant fervor continues to swirl in the headlines, it's not difficult for readers to discern who's stirring the pot. Over the weekend, House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) became the latest..... |

APOD: 2010 August 15 - Layered Hills in Arabia Terra on Mars Posted: 15 Aug 2010 02:40 PM PDT Why are some hills on Mars so layered? The answer is still under investigation. Clearly, dark windblown sand surrounds outcropping of light sedimentary rock across the floor of crater Arabia Terra. The light rock clearly appears structured into many layers, the lowest of which is likely very old. Although the dark sand forms dunes... |

Gen. David Petraeus Says Afghanistan War Strategy is 'SOUND' Posted: 15 Aug 2010 02:00 PM PDT KABUL -- In his first six weeks as the top U.S. and NATO commander in Afghanistan, Gen. David H. Petraeus has seen insurgent attacks on coalition forces spike to record levels, violence metastasize to previously stable areas, and the country's president undercut anti-corruption units backed by Wa... |

A change in thinking on Pompeii Posted: 15 Aug 2010 12:40 PM PDT Since the uncovering of Pompeii in 1599, archeologists believed that these ancient Romans died by being suffocated by the ashes and gases spewing for two days from the mouth of Vesuvius. Their theory rested on the account of a contemporary witness, Pliny the Younger, who saw the eruption from across the Gulf of Naples... |

Lack of nearby parks, playgrounds are why children are obese Posted: 15 Aug 2010 09:30 AM PDT I was always under the rosy assumption that every kid grew up knowing the joys of a local playground. But it turns out that only about one in five kids live near parks. Health officials have concluded that this may be one reason why so many American kids are overweight -- there's nowhere closeby for them to run around, play and get exercise. |
