Bedbugs found in Empire State Building Posted: 21 Aug 2010 05:50 PM PDT First came King Kong. Now, bedbugs are trying to conquer the Empire State Building. An infestation of the creepy crawlers has hit the city's most iconic building. Futurama Writer Created And Proved A Brand New Math Theorem Posted: 21 Aug 2010 04:20 PM PDT We all knew the writing staff of Futurama was brainy but this is something else. To work out the ridiculous brain switching plot line from last night's hilarious episode, writer Ken Keeler (who also just happens to have a PhD in mathematics) ended up writing and proving an entirely new theorem. This is probably the most impressive bit of side work |
Deep-Sea Oil Plume in the Gulf is Real and Could Surface Posted: 21 Aug 2010 04:00 PM PDT Until now, scientists had not been sure of the plume's existence and could only hint at its possible size. The new research shows that the plume is 1.2 miles wide, 650 feet high and at least 25 miles long – at least that is as much as WHOI researchers could measure before Hurricane Alex made them turn back to shore. |

Hallucinogenic Sludge Brings Tourists to Peru Posted: 21 Aug 2010 11:20 AM PDT A hallucinogenic sludge-like potion called ayahuasca is increasingly becoming an elixir for foreigners grappling with everything from depression to childhood trauma. Ayahuasca may taste like ground-up dirt, but many leave Peru praising the brew in reverential terms for having purged them of their demons. |
Grisly find in search for Japanese centenarians Posted: 21 Aug 2010 11:00 AM PDT A nationwide search for missing centenarians in Japan has led to another grisly discovery -- the remains of a Tokyo woman who was believed to be 104 stuffed into her son's backpack for nearly a decade. "I laid out her body for a while, washed it in the bath, then broke up the bones and put them into a backpack." |
